How to Choose Keywords For Maximum Effect
1.) Use 3 And 4 word Keyword Phrases
Let us say you want to rank for “London car mechanic”. Google is intelligent enough nowadays to understand that if your back links and pages are optimizing for the keyword “London car mechanic” that you’re also likely should rank for “London car mechanics” and even “London auto repair”. Likewise, if you optimize for “Earlsfield car mechanic ” then that page also has some likelihood of ranking for “Earlsfield auto repair ” because Google knows that Earlsfield is in London.
This means you should target 3 and 4 word key phrases since they’re both easier to rank for, and they help you rank for the main keyword (like the three word “London car mechanic” phrase).
2.) Target Buyer Keywords
Search for a specific keyword with buying intentions rather than being just for fun or even subject research, just by looking at the keyword. For example, which two of these 4 keywords have buying intentions and which do not?
- great price for XBOX 360
- where can I find a good patio awning?
- quick PC repair
- pics from Buckingham Palace
So keep clear of wasting your service on building links for keywords that have no buying intent. You want site traffic that intend to buy your offer.
3.) Use LSI Keywords
First, LSI(Latent semantic indexing) is explained in detail here:
Google is also smart about figuring out what keywords are related, i.e. what keywords are likely to occur together in the back link text or in the text of the site. Furthermore, Google uses LSI keywords to disambiguate the meaning of the text on your site. Here’s an example:
- The words “mustang” and “prairie” occurring together probably mean the site is about horses.
- The words “Mustang” and “car” occurring together might mean that the site is about the car manufacturer Ford.
- And the words “Mustang” and ” Ontario ” mean the page is likely about the athletic team Western Ontario Mustangs
There are three main reasons to use LSI keywords in your back links:
- This can help Google figure out the subject of the page and it gives a large boost towards ranking the page for the intended keyword.
- It looks more natural if the links to a page have anchor text with a good selection of related keywords, and not repeated usage of one keyword.
- And finally using LSI keywords can make your page rank for more keywords, resulting in more traffic overall to your site. If a group of LSI keywords contains 7 keywords and you use 4 of them, that is an indication to Google that maybe you should rank for the remaining 3 in that group as well.
