Ad Blocker
Software placed on a user’s personal computer that prevents advertisements from being displayed on the Web. Benefits of an ad blocker include the ability of Web pages to load faster and the prevention of user tracking by ad networks.
Ad Network
Companies that purchase and place banner advertisements on behalf of their clients.
Anonymizer
A service that prevents Web sites from seeing a user’s Internet Protocol (IP) address. The service operates as an intermediary to protect the user’s identity.
Attachment
A file that can be sent along with an email. For example, you can attach a text document to an email so that the receiver will be able to open and read it. Most email programs allow you to easily attach a file to a message by simply selecting the "attach" or "attachment" option. Then find and select the file name. It should now be attached to your message.
Authentication
'An email client usually offers an ''Authentication'' option, so that whenever you check or send mail your user name and password will be verified. Many ISPs require authentication in order to avoid spam mail being sent through their servers.'
Banner Ad
Advertisement for a product or company that is placed on a Web page in order to sell site visitors a good or service. Clicking on a banner will take the visitor to a site to learn more about that product or service. They serve a similar purpose as a billboard or television commercial.
Case sensitive
This differentiates between upper and lower case lettering. If something is case-sensitive, such as your NetIdentity password, you must use the same upper or lower case lettering as you did when originally entering your password. If something is not case-sensitive, such as your email address, you can use any combination of upper or lower case lettering. For example, TeSt@YourAddreSS.Com is the same as test@yOuRaDDresS.com.
CGI
CGI (Common Gateway Interface)
Clear GIF (Tracker GIF)
A Web site or email graphic designed to monitor who is reading the Web page or email.
Code of Fair Information Practices
Based on the following principles:
Cookie
A small text file that is placed on a user’s hard drive by the Web site that the user is visiting. This file records preferences and other data about your visit to that particular site. This is most evident when a user returns to a site and is greeted by name. Cookies are often used for long term data collection.
Cookie Buster
Software that is designed to block the placement of cookies by ad networks and Web sites. This prevents companies from tracking a user’s activity.
Data Spill
The result of a poorly designed form on a Web site. The information may leak to Web servers of other companies, perhaps an ad network or advertising agency.
Digital Certificate
Using encryption technology, a document can be digitally stamped or certified as to its place of origin. A certification authority supports/legitimizes the certificates.
Digital Signature
Digital certification or stamp that authenticates an individual’s signature is legitimate. This is done using encryption technology.
Domain name
In an email address, the domain name is the part after the @ in the address. For example, in test@teamdiscovery.co.uk, the domain name is teamdiscoveyr.co.uk. The most common domain names end in .com, .net, and .org, .co.uk, org.uk
Download
'This means to receive information from another location onto your local computer. In regard to email, when using an email client you must download your messages onto your computer from your email servers, where it is held until you retrieve them. When you ''check mail'' on a mail client, this is what it is doing. Downloads can take various amounts of time depending on the speed of your internet connection and the size of the file being downloaded.'
Dynamic IP Address
An IP address that changes every time a user logs on, or dials-up, to a computer.
email
Sending and receiving messages electronically, usually over the Internet. An email address can send emails three ways: by using a mail client (such as Eudora or Microsoft Outlook) to download messages onto your computer after being held on remote servers, by using webmail to log into an internet-based mailbox to read messages, and by forwarding your email address to another email address, so that any emails that come to your hosting servers will be automatically sent to the specified address.
email address
The address used to send and receive messages electronically. An email address consists of username@domainname (for example, test@teamdiscovery.co.uk, where test is the user name and teamdiscovery.co.uk is the domain name). Most email addresses are some combination of FirstName and LastName at the domain name, such as jimsmith@domainname.co.uk.
